As usual, the BBC has a good writeup of what happened in both <a title=\"BBC - London protests\" href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/uk\/7332942.stm\">London<\/a> and <a title=\"BBC - Paris protests\" href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/world\/europe\/7334545.stm\">Paris<\/a>. Points of interest include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>accusations of heavy-handedness against the Met police<\/li>\n<li>two attempts to extinguish torch<\/li>\n<li>one attempt to steal torch from former Blue Peter presenter Connie Huq<\/li>\n<li>deviation from planned route through Chinatown<\/li>\n<li>4 arrested in Paris, 37 arrested in London<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"BBC - Clegg urges boycott\" href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/uk_politics\/7330631.stm\">no boycott from Gordon Brown<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Also, in our <a title=\"GU Amnesty - human rights in China getting worse\" href=\"http:\/\/www.guamnesty.org.uk\/blog\/2008\/04\/human-rights-in-china-getting-worse-not-better\/\">previous post<\/a>, we referred to a report by Amnesty International that claimed that China was clamping down on dissidents in the run-up to the Olympic games. It would appear this claim hhas some merit &#8211; the day after the report was published, Hu Jia, a prominent human rights activist was <a title=\"BBC - Hu Jia jailed\" href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/world\/asia-pacific\/7327718.stm\">jailed for three and a half years<\/a> for subversion.<\/p>\n<p>With the Olympic flame due to travel to San Francisco next as part of its 20-country worldwide tour, and with the death toll from protests in Tibet ranging from 19 to dozens, what form will further protest take (if any) before it reaches Beijing?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By now, the olympic flame has made its way through both London and Paris, garnering the attention of both protests and One China &#8216;anti-protests&#8217; alike.
