Burma VJ

After last weeks meeting many of you came up and asked about the possibility of watching the rest of the film, so we decided to host a screening to serve just that purpose! Come along to see the full document, a very worthwhile watch. If, however, anyone cannot make it on Wednesday then you are more than welcome to borrow my copy and pass it around.

Glasgow Vs Edinburgh Letter-off (11th-16th October)

For those of you who expressed an interest in our letter-off team this is a reminder of our meeting tomorrow at 5pm in the Hubb. If this is the first you’ve heard and you’re interested in getting involved in the letter-off team please get in touch or feel free to come along tomorrow.

Weekend Away (15th-17th October)

Our weekend to the Isle of Arran is fast approaching! Please bring £20 deposit along to the meeting on Tuesday and in return we shall provide you with some sponsor forms to get going on our mountain challenge. We still have a few spaces left so if anyone is interested in joining let us know!

Take Action for Chen Guangcheng

September 22, 2010 in actions, china by Rob Hallam

Chen Guangcheng

Chen Guangcheng

An ad hoc legal adviser and his family are facing the very real prospect of starving to death in their own home in the Shandong province in China.

Since his release from prison on 9 September Chen Guangcheng and his family have been under house arrest imposed by village leaders in Dongshigu village, Shandong province. Chen Guangcheng is in urgent need of medical attention and he and his family are running out of food, but the authorities have refused to let them leave their home.

Hello!

A warm welcome to Glasgow for all the Freshers and a warm welcome back to everyone else.
As you have expressed an interest in the GU Amnesty International group this email is just to let you know that our first meeting will be:

Tuesday the 21st at 5 o’clock in Committee room 1 at the top of the QMU (3rd floor).

Committee room 1 is at the very top of the building and can be accessed either by taking the lift to the top floor or the stair case on the left hand side of the Food Factory, turning left, going through the double doors then committee room 1 is the first room on the right, (don’t worry, a few of us will be lingering downstairs to show you were to go)

The meeting will be an introduction to what we do, what we have done and what we plan to do in the coming year with pretty pictures . There will also be a chance to partake in our ongoing Burma campaign and ask any burning questions you might have, but most importantly there will be cake & biscuits. Ding!

Immediately after the meeting at 6 o’clock we have our first social in Curlers Rest on Byres road (next to Hillhead underground station). We can all head down straight after the meeting, the idea to just generally be social and use it as yet another chance to chat to Amnesty members new and old!

If you can’t make it this Tuesday then please come along next Tuesday or any Tuesday thereafter, meetings are always Tuesdays, 5pm, committee room 1, QMU. Also check out all our online networking at:

So come along for some human rights based edu-tainment 😉

Best wishes,
The GU Amnesty International Fresher’s team and committee.

“I think of a hero as someone who understands the degree of responsibility that comes with his freedom” – Bob Dylan.

“The human race is an unfair and stupid competition. A lot of the runners don’t even get decent sneakers or clean drinking water. Some people are born with a massive head start, every possible help along the way and still the referees seem to be on their side. It’s not surprising that some people have given up competing altogether and gone to sit in the grandstand, eat junk food and shout abuse. What we need is a lot more streakers.” – Banksy.

“Human history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe.” – H.G. Wells.

“You cannot change anything in your life with intention alone, which can become a watered-down occasional hope that you’ll get to tomorrow. Intention without action is useless.” – Caroline Myss.

Burma 8-8-88

August 8, 2010 in information by Rob Hallam

Today is the 22nd anniversary of the 8-8-88 protests, when hundreds of thousands of peaceful protestors took to the streets to call for human rights and democracy. It was to end in bloodshed – a brutal crackdown by the ruling military junta would leave an estimated 3,000 people dead in the weeks that followed. The anniversary is still marked around the world.

The leader of the protests back then was Min Ko Naing. He was also involved in organising the protests in 2007. He is now in jail and is one of Amnesty’s priority cases. Sadly little seems to have changed over the years and the junta’s reaction to the protests back in 2007 only reinforced the point. Burma is a country where torture, slave labour and unfair trials are all common place. And there are estimated 2,200 political prisoners there.

Waihhin is a Burmese student living in London, and her father Ko Mya Aye was also involved in both protests. He is currently serving a 65-year jail sentence.

A good timeline of the events in Burma is available on Dipity.

New Website!

August 4, 2010 in information, news by Rob Hallam

We have a new website! The old one, though it served a purpose, was getting a bit long in the tooth. In the spirit of the new decade, we have a fancy new updated design. The driving ideas behind the design are simplicity and integration. Simplicity so that it is easier for people to find out information, especially new members. Integration so that all pages share a common design, so the jump to the blog (for example) is less jarring than it was before.

If you have any comments on what you’d like to see on the blog or any improvements, please either leave them below, or contact us through Facebook or by email. Cheers!

Glasgow To Edinburgh On Two Wheels

May 28, 2010 in events, photos by Rob Hallam

We made it! 60 miles, and we got to Edinburgh (eventually!). There were a couple of setbacks (puncture, mangled wheel), but we avoided major disaster and no-one fell in the canal. We were raising money for the Glasgow Unity Centre, which does great work in providing asylum seekers and refugees with invaluable services.

Amnestea In The Park

May 26, 2010 in events, main, photos by Rob Hallam

As an end-of year event, we had a tea party / picnic in Kelvingrove Park in the glorious sunshine, modelled on the Amnestea parties Amnesty has been organising. It was such good fun it was tentatively decided we will have another one next year!

Updates And Tonight

May 4, 2010 in information, news by Rob Hallam

Last weeks AGM elected the following as the new committee for GU Amnesty 2010-11

President: Megan Bailey
Vice President: Catriona Reilly
Secretary: Claudia Madruga
Treasurer: Jen Conway
Fundraising Co-ordinator: Catherine Wright
Website Convenor: Robert Hallam
Ordinary Board Member: Claire Rooney

Congratulations to all the new members. Judging by the speeches it sounds like next year will be a very exciting time to be in Amnesty again!

And thanks very much to everyone who came along to show their support..

Tonight’s meeting: I know you will all be frazzled with exams, but for a little break and a bit of alternative brain expansion we will be screening ‘Blood Diamond’ (or as much of it as we can show, with a ‘to be continued’ promise)

Best wishes,

Ruth
