Hey All
Just to let you know at the meeting this week we shall be giving you guys the first chance to grab a much coveted ticket for our Secret Policeman’s Ball. If you bring your money to the meeting on Tuesday that would be grand. We are hoping to sell out so please tell all your friends that this is a night not to miss.
All proceeds go towards G.U.A.I’S Raise-off so all of your support is much appreciated.
If you can’t make the meeting on Tuesday don’t despair, there will be ticket sellers all around Glasgow Uni and around the QMU in the next few weeks.
Hope to see you all there!

We made it, battling through rain and wind and mud (and paint!). Well done to everyone who took part and to those who came along for moral support – you were much needed!

Hey guys,
Firstly, it was great to see so many of you at our first meeting yesterday. All your ideas were amazing and im very very excited for the upcoming year! My plan is to put together a raise off team in order to get everyone who wants to be as involved as possible. This will hopefully be happening within the next few weeks so watch this space!!
Next, as im sure you’re all aware (it has been plugged enough!) our first event this year will be the big fun run on the 4th of October. It’s fantastic that so many of you want to come along and be involved, either by running or by cheering! It looks to be a really fun and most importantly really awarenenss raising day!
For those of you who are lovely enough to be giving up your Saturday to come cheer us on, we will need to be at the event for half ten and so i propose we all meet outside the QMU at 9.45 (eek) so we can head over to bellahousten park together. Anyone who knows where it is and wants to make there own way there thats great too! I just ask that anyone who is meeting at the QMU to let me know so we dont leave without you!
For those of you who have so wonderfully offered to run, im afraid there is an entry fee of รยฃ7.50. I realise we are all students and this is quite a lot to ask so please dont feel pressure (louder cheers will be ace!) However, if you would still like to run the following link will allow you to register:
Sponsor forms are available to download on the amnesty uk website or to make life easier i have a bundle of them that i will bring to next weeks meeting.
Thank you so much

So, Amnesty says that Chinese human rights are getting worse ahead of the games, because they are ‘clamping down on dissent in order to portray a stable and harmonious image’.
This is just one of many views wandering around the internet, along with plenty of others in the pubs and meeting halls of the country as the Olympics, and by extension China, come into focus now that the torch is on it’s way around the world. I am certain that there will be plenty of protests along the way, in fact Amnesty have one planned for London on Sunday. The Chinese Ambassador is rumoured to have pulled out of the London torch relay, although that isn’t confirmed. The same article mentions the Chinese students who will be counter-demonstrating in support of the games.
On the one hand, China have recently allowed the English BBC website through their filters, a decision which provoked much interest from Chinese internet users – read some of their thoughts here.
On the other hand, there are riots in Tibet, Nick Clegg urging Gordon Brown to boycott the games, and politicians asking George Bush to do the same (mentioned in the report linked at the top).
So, are the Games improving things or not? It seems to me that on the surface, things will get better, for a little while. There will be a few highly publicised ‘improvements’. And then, when the games are over and the spotlight is taken away, China will go straight back to ignoring human rights like always. It is up to Amnesty, HRW and everyone of a similar mind to make sure that spotlight stays there and encourages real, long term change.

GU Amnesty and S.T.A.R are having a sleep-out outside the Wolfson Medical School building on Wednesday 5th March to raise awareness of the plight of refugees and failed asylum seekers.
If you’ve got a few hours spare or you feel like a chat on your way back from the pub, come along and join us for food and hot drinks, music and banter. It’ll be cold but fun!
We have a poster promoting the event:
